The Anaheim Ducks may have unofficially ended their relationship with oft-injured back-up goalie Dan Ellis by inking Swedish netminder Viktor Fasth to a one-year, one-way deal worth $1 million.

Ellis is an unrestricted free agent and more than likely wasn't in the Ducks future plans. Ellis earned $1.5 million this past season, but only appeared in 10 games. He missed most of the season with a groin injury.

The Ducks confirmed the deal to OC Register blogger Curtis Zupke who announced the deal was done via twitter.

Fasth, 29, spent last season in SEL before deciding to make the jump to the NHL. He will compete with Jeff Deslauriers for the right to back-up Ducks starter Jonas Hiller next season.

The Swedish goalie just completed a decent run at the IIHF World Championships. He started six of Sweden’s eight tournament games, earning a record of 4-2 with a 2.34 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage to go along with two shutouts. Not bad considering many of the players at the World Championships are of NHL caliber talent.

This is another good signing by the Ducks. In my opinion you can kiss Deslauriers good-bye. By bringing in Fasth Anaheim is attempting to shore up the goalie position. This will give head coach Bruce Boudreau a chance to give a Hiller a few more days off if needed and as an insurance policy in case Jonas gets hurt again.
