Perhaps Garth Snow's Russian isn't that good any longer, or perhaps Kirill's agent saw the list of European players currently in the NHL and thought his client would be better off staying put. So Kirill Petrov, the one we waited for, is not heading to North America any time soon.

It was announced a few hours ago that Kirill has signed a contract extension with his current club, Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL hockey league. They were very busy today signing a goaltender (Konstantin Barulin) and two forwards; Denis Abdullin and former Columbus Blue Jackets wing Maksim Mayorov who played in the AHL last season. They also signed extensions with three other players who were on their roster this season.

Yes, they were busy.

It's a shame considering that when Kirill was here for Islanders Mini-camp, everyone was under the impression he was really looking forward to playin in North America.

Here is a quote from PointBlank of July 7, 2010:

1:10 pm: In a one-on-one conversation with Point Blank, Kirill Petrov said he would play in Bridgeport for as long as the Islanders needed him, if they felt his development would benefit. “Two years, whatever.” In an ideal world for him, he joins the Islanders organization full-time immediately and leaves AK Bars and the KHL on proper terms. To the young man’s credit, he seems to want to do right by everyone

Things have a way of changing don't they... in so very many ways.
