Playoffs slipping away

With possibly their last chance for the playoffs staring them in the face, the Avs got outworked en route to a 5-1 loss.

The game was a parable to the Avs' season. They started slow, looked disjointed, got some momentum, made a comeback try but still fell short. When Joe Pavelski scored his second goal early in the third, the game was resigned to a scrimmage game where neither team was putting its best skills on display.

Joe Pavelski continued to burn the Avs with two goals, the second his 300th career point, most of them against the Avs it seemed. Torrey Mitchell scored the goal that put the game away after the Sharks out muscled Ryan O'Byrne and Jan Hejda while Paul Stastny, David Jones and Jamie McGinn watched.

Shane O'Brien had a game that was hot and cold. He scored and goal but took a bad penalty at the end of the second period that led to the Sharks' fourth goal and was caught screening his goaltender for the Shark's second goal.

All season long, the Avs have been hot and cold. They get momentum going and they are unstoppable but then the other team scores and they become tentative, waiting for the other team to kill them.

Even though the playoffs are a long shot, the Avs a fair sight better than the lottery pick team they were picked to be.

Three Stars

1. Joe Pavelski- two goals on the night and his 300th point
2. Dan Boyle- two assists
3. Antti Niemi- 28 saves on the night

Facepalm of the Game

O'Brien's take-down near the end of the second that led to the fourth goal

Bang bang play of the Game

For the Avs it was Ryan O'Reilly feeding O'Brien for the only goal. Great goal and about the only highlight
