Bust A Cap

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Alex Ovechkin has been playing the role of Harry Houdini in recent days. While the Sabres have been surging towards the eighth and final playoff spot, the Caps have been falling flat on the faces.

Great news for Sabres fans. Buffalo are 11-3-3 in the last 16 games and are playing exceptionally well right now. The news isn't so cheery for the Capitals. Alex n committed an ugly turnover that led to the game's only goal. His coach, Dale Hunter, was none to pleased and sat his captain down for a while in a one goal game. The Caps are falling apart before our very eyes.

On Friday night, Zach Parise and the Devils slapped the Caps 5-0. On Sunday night, Ilya Bryzgalov and the Flyers skunked the Flyers 1-0

Hardly the type of fight you'd expect from Dale Hunter's team.

When the Sabres win in regulation in Winnipeg on Monday night, the Sabres will jump from 11th place to 8th place.

Take a minute to wrap your head around the enormity of it all.

On Valentine's Day, the Sabres were left for dead and were 10 points out of the eighth and final playoff seed. In less than three weeks, they have corrected their course and have gotten back on the winning way.

In the weeks leading up to last Monday's NHL trade deadline, many Sabres fans had resigned themselves to the fact that their season was over. Many of them demanded that Darcy Regier trade away his assets and gut the team at the trade deadline. "Fail For Nail"
chatter was in the air and everywhere.

The Caps players have no one to blame but themselves for this late season meltdown. Their coach, Dale Hunter has taken to benching his vets in an effort to spark his team. It hasn't happened yet. The clock in ticking....

Look at the expression on Dale Hunter's face. Listen to the tone of his voice. Though he's only been on the Caps bench for a little while now, one has to speculate that Hunter has had it up to here with Ovechkin and his lack of urgency. Hunter will likely head back to OHL London next season. Hunter parked Ovechkin on the Caps bench for nearly 7:30 of clock time between shifts after Alex The GR8's turnover turned into the game winning goal for Philly. Hunter expects more from his captain.

Lindy Ruff gave his team the day off on Sunday in The Peg.

Robyn Regehr skated and he'll be a game time decision on Monday night. Regher hurt his hip in the seconds period the 2-0 shutout win in San Jose. He missed the entire third period of that game and then missed the entire Vancouver game.

Marcus Foligno has been sent back to Rochester.
