Lending "G" a Hand

Straka-Hrdina-Jagr.

That was one of two units Jaromir Jagr played on in 2000-01 when he last won the Art Rosst Trophy.

The other had Kip Miller replacing Straka.

Hartnell-Giroux-Jagr.

That's Jagr's current line. He's not in line for another scoring title, but Giroux is. Jagr told us today at the morning skate that his goal in the second half of the season is to help Giroux win the Art Ross.

“Individually, I have the goal to play the way I think I can - that would make me happy,”
Jagr said.

“Maybe help G to win the scoring title. Maybe help Hartsy to have the best season ever. That’s my goals.”

The difference between Jagr's line with Pittsburgh and his one now is that the Pens' line was simply a line of all skill.

His current line has some beef on in Hartnell and Jagr said the only way a player truly can be a scoring champion, unless you were a Mario Lemieux or Wayne Gretzky, was to be surrounded by strong linemates to help you achieve.

The only way Jagr and Giroux can achieve in the second half is to stay healthy. I have no doubts that if they are healthy, this line will catch fire again and Giroux will have a legit chance to become the first Flyer to win the Art Ross.

I asked Giroux about Jagr's comment.

“If I’m scoring points, I’m helping the team win, right?” Giroux asked. “Obviously, I want to do that. Jags has been talking about me for the last year about winning that. It be cool to win it, but I never would go out of my way to win the scoring title. If it’s there, it’s there.”

Danny Briere said after getting a chance to look at tapes over the All-Star break, it was the elbow to his face - under his shield - from the Devils' Anton Volchenkov that concussed him on Jan. 21.

"I never saw it coming," he said.
