The Nashville Predators got off to a slow start, but fired off a lunch bucket Nick Spaling goal in the first to jump out to a 3-0 first period lead. They rode stellar goaltending from Pekka Rinne during the second and held on through a solid third period with an insurance marker from Partic Hornqvist to ice the 4-1 win. It was a great mid period adjustment for a team that hasn’t shown a real knack for doing that. The scoring being balanced between veterans like Martin Erat and rookies like Ryan Ellis who got his second NHL goal, keeping Nashville’s white-hot power play rolling along.

It was Nashville’s sixth consecutive win over the Avalanche, a streak going back to the final game of the 2009-2010 season. The second half of the home and home is tomorrow night at the Bridge. Should be a good one and limited tickets are available as the franchise looks for its’ ninth consecutive sellout.

Random Notes

- After last night’s win, the Predators are 23-15-4, good for 50 points and 6th in the Western Conference. St. Louis and Chicago both won last night to take the lead in the central, Detroit is in third, and the Preds picked up two points on the Red Wings and stand three points back.

- You can almost see the younger players growing before your eyes, especially Ryan Ellis and Gabriel Bourque. You have to love the push these players are giving te rest of the team to up it’s game to hold onto their spot in the lineup.

- Practice today for the Preds at Bridgestone Arena, the 1pm session is not open to the public.

- Excellent column in today’s Winnipeg Sun from Paul Friesen comparing the rhetoric coming from Alain Vigneault regarding Brad Marchant to the same rhetoric that came from the same franchise regarding Steve Moore’s hit on Markus Naslund two weeks before the Todd Bertuzzi incident. Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen here.

- Jaroslav Halak pitched a shutout in his return to Montreal last night… that had to be satisfying.
