The Columbus Blue Jackets went into the third period with a 2-1 lead and would leave the game with a 6-3 loss as the Edmonton Oilers put on five goal onslaught including three coming from Ryan Jones. Derek Dorsett was one of the lone bright spots as he scored his first career multi-goal game and his first career shorthanded goal for the CBJ.

“We looked like a team that was playing three games in four nights,” Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel said. “You could tell by the way our legs weren’t going and how we were early in the game. It led to mistake after mistake.”

Jones made the Jackets pay for their tired legs as he scored his first career hat-trick. The former Miami University Redhawk had never scored even two goals in a game in his second NHL season.

The Jackets showed early that they were not ready for the Oilers speed as Rick Nash took a hooking call right off the opening face-off that Jordan Eberle turned into a goal only 21 seconds into the game.

Columbus kept coming though as they out shot Edmonton 21-7 but were only able to collect on a Mark Letestu power play effort.

Dorsett rung up his unassisted shorty at the 10:16 mark of the second period on a fantastic effort to beat Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk who came out of his crease to challenge the usually offensive challenged pest.

Instead of putting life into the Jackets, that was about the time that the Oilers youth, speed and rested legs started taking over the game even though the Jackets would escape the period with the lead.

In the first 8:06 of the third period Edmonton had scored three goals, two by Jones and another by Ladislav Smid and you knew that a rout could be coming.

Dorsett stopped the bleeding for awhile at the 11:00 mark with his second of the night but the Oilers were not about to sit back on a one goal lead.

“Doesn't really matter if I have two goals if we don't get two points,” Dorsett said after the game. “It's a frustrating loss.”

One of the biggest Jacket killers of all, Ales Hemsky put in his third goal of the campaign to give the Oilers a 5-3 lead. In 26 career games against Columbus, Hemsky has 12 goals and 35 points.

Jones completed his hat trick with an empty netter with 38 ticks on the clock remaining.
