Playing against a team 2-6-1 in its last nine, starting its winless backup goaltender, the Avs lost 3-1 and have now entered the realm of "where do we go from here?"
Despite coming off a good 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers, the Avs floundered in this game, taking many shots from the boards and not driving for rebounds. On odd man rushes the players not with the puck had their sticks in the air.
On defense, no one in particular- Hejda and O'Byrne- keep running around and taking bad angles, allowing players to enter into the slot.
When it comes to the powerplay, there is no energy, no movement, no shots. Only the PK's aggressive style looked good.
All of this adds up to one solution, a solution undertaken by the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes: fire the coach.
When the stars of your team are grinders, it is time to fire the coach. When the rookie defenseman playing his second game plays better positionally than the 35 year old veteran is, it is time to fire the coach. When after three years the players still cannot play 60 minutes, it is time to fire the coach.
Sacco has been coach three year and the problems listed above have plagued his teams since day one. Each year his team started hot only to collapse later. That is the identity of the team and one that must change.
Get the coach out of there and change the momentum of the team and the season.
Three Stars
1. Andrew Raycroft- nearly has the shutout, almost the second against his old team
2. Michael Ryder- A scoring forward, one the Avs could have used, scored twice
3. Loui Eriksson- two assists
Facepalm of the Game
Powerplay not scoring a single goal, nor getting good chances wins.
Bang Bang Play of the Game
Stefan Elliott wins again for his point shot that resulted in the other Avs goal.
