Seventeen straight losses on Bridgestone Arena ice and a big ole goose egg in the road win column. Both of those are now history for the Columbus Blue Jackets as Curtis Sanford kept his unbeaten record over the Nashville Predators in Music City alive in a 4-3 overtime win. A typical Preds / Jackets game, nasty, tight checking and close, the only anomaly I saw was the sloppy play from both sides.

Things got boiling early as the game saw two fights in the first 1:03 of play, and almost had a third bout five minutes later if the officials hadn’t stepped in, sending a clear message that they were done tolerating the fisticuffs. Penalties were the difference maker in this game as both teams tallied two power play goals. Highly unusual for Nashville to give up one, let alone two, and it was the reason Columbus got the win.

I have to admit, when Nick Spaling tied the game with about 5 and half to go I thought, “here it comes” … and I saw that look on some the Jacket players as well, but James Wisniewski had other ideas and won it with a cannon from the point in OT.

The Predators close out the homestand against Edmonton on Tuesday night with a chance to get eight of ten available points. Edmonton has been struggling a bit recently but seemed to have righted the ship last night with a dominating 9-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Some tickets remain…

Random Notes

- A rather pedestrian night for Pekka Rinne last night, there were two goals he normally stops. Considering his hot play of late, the team needed to pick him up.

- The line juggling was interesting last night. Craig Smith started the game on the third line, before being reunited with Colin Wilson and Patric Hornqvist in the third period.

- Tuesday night’s game marks the quarter pole of the season for Nashville.

- The Philadelphia Flyers and Winnipeg Jets have combined for 27 goals in two games this year.
