Per the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle's tweet minutes ago, the Maple Leafs have called up center Joe Colborne for tonight's match against the Washington Capitals.

The 21 year old Calgary, Alberta native played last night in the Marlies 2-1 victory in Rochester after missing three games with a lower body injury. He will be playing his second career NHL game, as he debuted in the final game of the regular season against Montreal last April, scoring an assist.

Colborne is the leading scorer on the Toronto Marlies with 10 goals and 9 assists in 13 games.

GM Brian Burke indicated earlier this week that he hesitated to call up a player who was just returning from injury, but that was before the losses of Matthew Lombardi and Mike Komisarek on Thursday night.

TSN's Jonas Siegel is reporting that the injury to defenseman Mike Komisarek is worse than previously thought. The "upper body" injury suffered in Nashville Thursday night upon further examination is a broken arm that will require surgery to repair and will keep him out of the lineup for two months.

The Leafs will go with six defenseman, with Cody Franson taking Komisarek's place in the lineup, but will likely recall a blueliner from the Toronto Marlies for the four game road trip after tonight's game vs Washington at the ACC.

It's worth mentioning a little blurb by Harvey Fialkov in today's Florida Sun-Sentinel,

In yet has been a week of surprising no-shows at morning skate, add Panthers backup goalie Scott Clemmensen to the MIA list. Apparently, Clemmensen’s first action of the season, his shutout of Dallas on Tuesday, was too much on his 34-year-old body as coach Kevin Dineen said he’s too sore to go.

So the call was made to San Antonio and rookie Jacob Markstrom is en route to be Jose Theodore’s backup tonight against the Penguins. Markstrom, who played so well while Clemmensen was recovering from preseason knee surgery, has struggled in San Antonio, going 2-3 with a pedestrian 3.60 GAA. Perhaps he was bored after going 2-2-1 with a sparkling 2.05 GAA with the big club.

There are rumors floating out there that the Maple Leafs are shopping for a goalie with the continuing mystery surrounding the concussion symptoms of James Reimer.

Clemmensen played briefly for the Leafs in 2007-08 in between stints with the Devils and was 1-1 with a 3.90 GAA.

The connection to the Leafs seems pretty weak, since Clemmensen did not play under Burke as a Leaf and from the what was said in the piece, the veteran goalie is not in any condition to handle playing a series of games if he is unavailable after one shutout performance.

Put this one in the "unlikely" category.
