Leafs interested in Nabokov??

Veteran NHL scribe Chris Botta is reporting this morning that the possibility exists that Toronto could be making a play for NY Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, in the wake of the injury to James Reimer and the inability of Jonas Gustavsson to play consistently.

Botta posed the question whether Isles GM Garth Snow would want to trade the veteran goalie inside the Eastern Conference, but after Nabokov gave up three goals in 14 minutes on Monday night in Boston, it may be a case where it is time to get something for him before his value declines.

The cost for the 36 year-old netminder would likely be a mid-level prospect or draft choice, but that cost is cheap when you consider that confidence in Gustavsson is waning and Ben Scrivens needs time in the AHL to round out his game.

Nabokov played for Ron Wilson in San Jose, is only making $570,000 this season and will be an unrestricted free agent at year’s end, so this move makes a lot of sense as a short term stop gap.

What say you, Leafs Nation??
