SEGUIN SIZZLES WITH HAT TRICK; BRUINS PUMMEL LEAFS 7-0

The Boston Bruins may have been suffering through a Stanley Cup hangover, but they were given a dose of Alka-Seltzer in the form of a tired Toronto Maple Leafs club, who put up little fight in a 7-0 drubbing at the Air Canada Center Saturday night.

Boston sophomore Tyler Seguin led the visitors with three goals and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Tim Thomas made 25 saves for his first shutout of the season.

The Bruins entered the game as the last place team in the Eastern Conference with a 4-7-0 record, while the Leafs were at the top of the standings with a 9-3-1 record after winning two consecutive road contests in New Jersey and Columbus.

Toronto’s 30th ranked penalty killing again displayed their ineptitude, putting the club in an early first period hole. After a Joey Crabb holding penalty, Rich Peverly fed a long pass from the right half boards cross ice to the waiting stick of Tyler Seguin, who snapped the puck by rookie goaltender Ben Scrivens for his fifth goal of the season.

The Bruins took the lethargic Leafs out of the game with two body blows in the second period, scoring pairs of goals within seconds of each other. In the opening minute, a puzzling curl at center ice by Clarke MacArthur led to a neutral zone turnover. The turnover led to Seguin’s second of the game, as he batted the puck out of midair past the young Leafs netminder. Just eight seconds later, Boston increased the lead to 3-0 as Toronto’s Tim Connolly stood at center ice after losing the center ice draw, while Zdeno Chara launched a long breakaway pass to Milan Lucic, who slid the puck between Scrivens legs.

The Leafs appeared completely sapped of any energy, as they were playing their third game in four nights, while the Bruins had not played since Tuesday’s victory at home against Ottawa. The rout was on when Seguin scored his hat trick goal at the 15:01 mark on a wrist shot the picked the top corner over the Scrivens left shoulder and was followed by David Krejci’s second goal of the season just 14 seconds later.

Scrivens was pulled in favor of Jonas Gustavsson, after allowing five goals on just 14 shots.

The Bruins made the game into a laugher with two more goals within twenty-eight seconds of each other in the third, as Lucic scored his second of the game on a two-on-one break and Gregory Campbell scored his first of the season.

The only sign of life from Toronto was provided by team captain Dion Phaneuf, who laid out Bruins forward Chris Kelly with a body check at the Leafs blueline.

Toronto is off until Tuesday when they take on the Florida Panthers at the ACC.
