Why The Habs Need Vinny... |

Slow rumor mill day today, so I thought I would throw out something that we just discussed on my xm show today.
The Canadiens need a face. Currently when a French-Canadian player, like say Simon Gagne, comes up for free agency, there are always a slew of rumors that the Habs are interested. If you ask around or talk to agents often (and if you do, my sincere apologies)....(just kidding) you would know that there are two reasons why high powered UFAs don't sign in Montreal.
Obviously, these kids want to play for the Habs. They are the Yankees of hockey. The history and lore, especially to FC kids is off the charts. Many of them come home from the hospitals wrapped in Habs blankets. The tradition, everyone knows someone, who knows someone who knows Guy Lafleur or Patrick Roy. Kids can never get tickets to the games, and when they do the names that hang in front of them leaves them with daydreams of glory.
The two reasons that some day they may decide to sign elsewhere.
1. The provincial tax is a killer for hockey players.
2. The pressure on a FC to be the next Lafleur or Roy transcends reason.
Many, and I mean many, great FC players have been swallowed whole by the machine on St. Catherine St.
Why did so many thrive in the past? Because there was always someone else there to take that pressure away. If there is a FC face on the Habs, the other FC's can thrive. That's not going to be a player like Simon Gagne. Simon is a great player, but not a bona fide Star.
Vincent Lecavalier is the guy. Bring him in and all the other young and talented FC's will immediately become better as the spotlight shifts to Vinny.
