Dropping April 14th is ITG’s latest release, the 2010-11 version of the annual “Between The Pipes” series.

A few brief thoughts on my part:

1) I have always liked the concept of this series, focusing solely of the goalies of the sport. Goaltenders have always gotten some special attention in the hobby, and their own series is certainly more than appropriate.

2) The nice thing about ITG’s licensing situation is that they were forced to look outside of just the NHL for the focus of their product, much to the benefit of their customers. In this product it pays off in the way of a focus on the womens’ game and minor/junior leagues in addition to current and former NHL’rs.

3) Have to say I’m underwhelmed by the base cards and non-memorabilia inserts, the latter of which especially look like slightly modified re-hashes of older ITG designs. Conversely, the memorabilia is hot, as per usual ITG standards, and is well worth the investment. ITG knows how to treat customers in that area better than any company out there.

4) Love the “Showdown” and “Complete Jersey” memorabilia cards. Solid ideas that are appealing both with regard to the memorabilia as well as conceptually.

5) Kudos again to OTG for the size of the memorabilia pieces. Not that we should expect anything less from them at this point!

6) Nice job getting a James Reimer insert card in their sporting the helmet he’s wearing with the big club, but I have to wonder: How do they get away with it? No NHL license yet the sketch shows a portion of the Leafs crest. Same with the Carey Price “Masked Men” card sporting a Canadiens crest on the mask. Didn’t Upper Deck get slammed by MLB last year for showing portions of team logos on their cards without a license? I’m likely missing out on some subtlety here, but it seems weird to me. Just saying…

Worth a check out folks. Each box has 18 packs of 9 cards, and insert ratios suggest you should be landing at least two memorabilia and non-memorabilia inserts per box (1 per 8 packs for each). Do let me know if pick it up and how you find it…
