Update to the previous blog: The Flyers will not be offering a contract to Bill Guerin, who had a mediocre preseason on a tryout for the club.

Tim will have the full story later.

In the final game of the preseason, the Buffalo Sabres took it to an Adirondack Phantoms team masquerading in Philadelphia Flyers uniforms. It was just one of those nights at the end of the preseason where the Flyers didn't want to risk injury to their regulars.

Among the few vets who did play, none had a particularly good night. Bill Guerin struggled in his final tryout game. Dan Carcillo earned himself 10-minute and game misconducts for yapping at the refs. Andrej Meszaros had a poor game on the blueline. When the score of the 9-3 massacre started to get out of hand, Blair Betts was held out of the remainder of the game for precautionary reasons (i.e., no reason to risk injury to a player coming back ahead of schedule from surgery).

Johan Backlund was in a tough spot, making his first and only appearance of the preseason following a protracted recovery from offseason hip surgery and playing in front of a badly outmanned squad. The result was a real ugly outing, which wasn't unexpected.

As has been his mantra for weeks, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has reiterated that the waiver eligibility of the non-rookie bubble players on the preseason roster -- Matt Walker, Oskars Bartulis and Backlund -- will not impact the club's final roster decisions. There is also no word as of this writing on the final decision on whether to sign Guerin.

Kathy Fraser, the wife of longtime NHL referee and South Jersey resident Kerry Fraser, is scheduled to undergo a heart catheterization procedure this week. The Frasers are active members of the local community apart from Kerry's hockey endeavors, and I think I can safely speak for everyone in wishing Mrs. Fraser a speedy recovery after the procedure.
