Clarke Doesn't Like Carefree Attitude of Flyers

Here's how the Flyers 1-5-1 pre-season ended: between the first and second period in Washington, general manager Bob Clarke emerged from his balcony box and was asked to evaluate his club.

He proceeded to rip.

The GM is very unhappy with his defensemen and several of his forwards. He is more concerned about the laissez-faire faire attitude of his club, than the fact this team has NO chemistry whatsoever.

And frankly, he's right.

Randy Jones, Freddy Meyer, Nolan Baumgartner and Denis Gauthier are on Clarke's blue line hit list. And while he wouldn't name names on offense, Mark Cullen, Niko Dimitrakos and Petr Nedved on among the group of forwards on the other side of that hit list.

Clarke named the forwards he was "okay" with and none of the names above were on it. None of those players mentioned above have distinguished themselves in training camp.

Today, the Flyers are at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. There are doing a little team bonding for 24 hours.

On Monday, Clarke predicted some players are in for a rude awakening. The problem is, he conceded, because of injuries on defense - Lars Jonsson will miss 2-3 weeks with a high, right ankle sprain while Gauthier has a concussion suffered during Friday's 1-0 loss here in Washington _ some players are going to be on the roster only out of necessity.

"At times we’ve been pretty good and at times we’ve been indifferent,” Clarke said. “There are some players we consider on the bubble who have not recognized it themselves. Some of the veteran guys have been just OK and at different times been good. There are guys being pushed out of a job and I don’t think they even recognize it.

"Jones and Meyer have not show me very much for guys who should be fighting for a job. Meyer was a good player for us last year and I don’t think he’s had a good camp. I don’t think Jones has had a good camp. They’ve been inconsistent and have not shown the fire it will take to be a regular.

"There’s been a lot of forwards that I look at, and they’re gonna be shocked, but they shouldn’t be given their performance. But they will be.”

Clarke says Monday will stun some of these players but again, the Flyers' injury situation doesn't leave them with many options.

BTW: Baumgartner was the Flyers' prized free agent signing among the defense this summer.
