Random Notes - As college football kicks off its’ season tonight, that can only mean one thing… hockey’s getting closer! Some random notes…

- Nice to see the boys out on the ice for informal workouts yesterday being led by JP Dumont and Steve Sullivan. This team has been talking all summer about being on a mission after last season’s disappointing end. They appear to be walking that talk so far, working hard on fundamentals and drills.

- A couple of roster filling acquisitions over the past few days in Pred Nation. This should help fill the defense in Milwaukee as Aaron Johnson was signed on Tuesday and Grant Lewis was acquired yesterday.

- The Peterson for Parkinsons golf event is just a week away. There will be a nice party and silent auction at the Factory in Franklin a week from tonight and a golf tournament on Friday 9/10 at Legends. Go to the PFP website at this link for all the details.

- A big welcome to the Tennessean’s new Preds beat writer Josh Cooper. He is off to a great start, with five posts to his Tennessean blog site in his first two days… welcome to the beat Josh!

- So, Antti Neimi is going to the Sharks… interesting. It does create quite a competitive situation with Antero Niittymaki and Thomas Greiss. I don’t think anyone can say that the Sharks have upgraded in goal, but Coach Todd McLellan is of the Red Wing school and seems to have adapted that thought process on goaltending…

- Unbelievable all of the misinformation being thrown out regarding the Kovalchuk contract. Deadline extensions, examining other deals, etc... Can we just get this thing done already?

- Bill Guerin working out at the Flyers facility in New Jersey has chins wagging… may be a good fit for the Fly-guys.

- Good column from Bruce Dowbiggin in yesterday’s Globe and Mail. Is there really a controversy over an American play-by-play announcer being hired to handle Edmonton Oiler games? Really???

- There are still quite a few free agents left on the table as we begin September. Bill Guerin, Jose Theodore, Ray Emery. Marek Svatos, Andreas Lilja, Kyle Wellwood, Darcy Tucker, Miroslav Satan and former Pred Scott Walker, just to name a few. Some help to be had on that list for quite a few teams.

- The identity of the Phoenix Coyotes’ “mystery buyer” has been revealed by ESPN. It’s Matthew Hulsizer, a Chicago based entrepreneur. everything I have seen on him says he has some bucks... and a passion for the game.

- 37 days till Opening Night.
