As the saying goes, “Everything old becomes new again”. This certainly is true of one of the earlier releases on this years’ collectibles calendar, 2010-11 Score Hockey. The second release by hockey card newcomer Panini (although certainly not a newbie to hockey overall!), the entry-level Score product will drop in mid-October.

The great thing about this release is that it really has both the younger and older collectors in mind. As far as us older guys go, Panini has given us a time machine of sorts by paying homage to the first Score release of 1990-91 by way of the 90-91 insert designs such as “The Franchise”, 90-91 base card design parallels and thee chance to win autographed buy-backs from the original set. For the younger collector you’ve got a 36-pack box at a 99 cent pack price, 550 card base set with 50 rookies and cool inserts like “Snow-Globe Die-Cuts”.

Should you be a memorabilia collector you won’t be left completely out in the dark here, but it will be a little tougher on you, with autographed cards inserted one per case. At the same time this also takes us back to a time when people weren’t expecting multiple autographs a box, resulting in many signatures coming from highly irrelevant players, so I’m actually alright with this!

In terms of what you can expect from a box of this release, you will pull (on average of course) 18 Rookie Cards, 36 Glossy inserts, 12 additional insert cards and a Rookie Redemption card redeemable for a 2010-11 rookie. In addition, with its 550 card base-set this will be a set-builders dream, especially when you could take a run at completing the vast majority of it with 3-4 boxes

While there is more news and previews to come on this product as the release date approaches, here are a few pics to tide you over until then:

Definitely sounds like a great bargain to me! What do you guys think? Let me know when you pick some up!
