Kaberle, Kings/Mara, Selanne/Kariya, Habs, Look To the Southeast for Niemi

Things are heating up nicely now on the Kaberle front...

Rumors abound that the offers are increasing and for the first time I am feeling a sense that this deal will get done. I know Leafs fans want this (although I do believe Kaberle is a much better player at a much better price than Leafs fans have ever admitted to.)

I am hearing the Kings and Bruins in on Kaberle mostly today...however, I do believe if the Kovalchuk fiasco ends up jettisoning Kovalchuk from Newark, the NJ Devils will be all over Kaberle. Perhaps even if the Kovalchuk cap hit stays as it is the Devils could find a way.

Sources tell me Tampa is NOT a player in the Kaberle sweepstakes.

On the Kings and Mara...

The LA Kings are looking hard at Paul Mara, and I like that fit. The Kings first priority is absolutely defense right now. More and more it feels like Simmonds could be moved as well...I wouldn't do it, but it definitely is hanging out there...

On Tim Kennedy...

Word is out today is one of Kennedy's friends, Patrick Kane, is definitely putting in a solid word for him...

On Selanne and Kariya...

I am growing more and more certain we could see a Selanne/Kariya reunion in Anaheim this season...The Pittsburgh rumors still are bouncing around as well, but signs are pointing to Anaheim.

Edmonton, Anaheim, LA in on Ryan Johnson...

Rumors today abound that the Kings, Oilers and Ducks have interest in forward Ryan Johnson. Ryan is definitely a solid pickup.

Canadiens trying to get Steve Bernier in a Trade?

Bernier was already traded once this offseason...he was moved at the draft to Florida for Keith Ballard.

On Antti Niemi...

Two teams from the Southeast are rumored to be showing interest in the UFA Goalie. Florida and Washington. In Florida you have a GM who was a part of bringing Niemi to Chicago and has a a strong belief in Niemi. In Washington, who last night I was told was not in on Niemi, only to be corrected today, you have a team who has gone out of its way to let people know they are going with their two young goalies.

However a Washington source put it best saying: "The knock on this team continues to be its inability to perform in the playoffs. Especially in net. In Niemi you can show the fans you are getting a proven winner. And reasonably..."
