Many times the best NHL prospects are drafted to teams that are in a rebuilding mode. Some of them are original six franchises and some of them are located in some pretty big cities. Ryan Johansen is a very talented forward, almost a shoe-in to be a top 15 pick. He’s from Port, Moody, British Columbia where they are lucky if there are 30,000 people. This coming June he could end up in a metropolis.
“I’d like to play in a big city,” said the Portland Winterhawks star who thinks that’s the big city. “A small city is fine as well. Where I’m from in BC is smaller but Portland is much bigger.”
At 6-2, approximately 180 pounds he’s a pretty big center who may continue to grow. His already well-rounded game is likely to continue to blossom and the fact that he can play more than one position could land him in the top ten.
“I think center is a nice fit for me now. I played “D” up until Bantam and then wing for a year. I’m a pretty versatile player.”
Last season he had his sights set on 20 goals and he reached 25. Next season could be different.
“I think at times I need to shoot more,” he said honestly. “Next year’s goal might be over 30 depending on where I play.”
He is a linemate of another top ten hopeful, Nino Niederreiter. Between the two they were very successful and now they will both get drafted which is something that is pretty special.
“I think realistically I’ll play another year in the “W”. I don’t think it’s a realistic goal to play in the NHL at 19. You have to have exceptional skills. It shows me I’m not too far off like when I played in camps with Evander Kane (Atlanta).”
He likes techno music and loves lobster if it’s a good night. Most big cities have those elements so it seems like Johansen would take to that like a fish to water.
