Game 3 Thoughts and Rink Rebuild Results

A huge overtime win for Philly last night, as Tim Saunders put it, “the Flyers still have some magic left!” Once again the boys from the City of Brotherly Love showed a resilience that has been simply amazing. A 2-2 game heading into the third, Patrick Kane gets sprung on a nice outlet pass from Jonathan Toews and buries it, sucking the life out of the Wachovia Center… for exactly 20 seconds. That’s how long it took the Flyers to respond on Ville Leino’s goal on a simple hockey play, drive the net and pick up the garbage. It was probably the first real lucky bounce the Flyers have gotten in this series.

The disallowed goal in overtime could've deflated the Flyers, but their resiliancy showed again, getting the game winner as Claude Giroux capped a three point night.

Two streaks were broken last night… Chicago’s seven playoff game road winning streak that dated back to the ‘Hawks opening round game three loss to the Predators and Philadelphia’s seven game Stanley Cup Final losing streak that dated back to their game seven loss to the Edmonton Oilers in 1987.

Rumors of Philly’s demise may have been slightly exaggerated, but make no mistake. The Flyers must hold serve on Friday night or this series is done like dinner.

Think there might be a little dancing going on? Not just in Philly… but at 30 Rock? Given the boffo ratings this series is generating, NBC Sports has to be thrilled to get at least one more game. NHL TV Ratings records are falling like dominos with each passing game… a six or seven game series could result in the most watched final ever.

-------------------------------------

I can’t think of a series where the singing of the National Anthem has been so consistently stirring in both rinks. From the cheering at United Center during the “Star Spangled Banner,” to last night’s Kate Smith / Lauren Hart duet of “God Bless America” ... The historic connections of that duet hearken back to the glory days of Flyer hockey and still give chills.

The hockey community in Nashville came out in force to help rebuild the Bellevue inline rink. The SlapShot Radio Rink Rebuild Event was last night at Pie in the Sky Pizza- Midtown. The silent auction and donations resulted in over $1700 raised. The live remote of SlapShot Radio featured almost all the voices of the Predators including Tom Callahan, in arena host 97.1 RQQ’s Mac, and radio analyst Stu Grimson. Big thanks also go out to Brent Peterson who appeared and had a very honest appraisal on the Predator’s season.

Thanks to our event sponsors… SportsRadio 560 WNSR and Pie in the Sky Pizza,

Thanks to the businesses that contributed including Centennial Sportsplex, Café Coco, Wave Country, The Crag @ Cool Springs, the Nashville Predators, the Ottawa Senators, the Dallas Stars and many individuals.

Denise and I would like to thank the great SlapShot Radio team for their efforts, Pete & Claudia, Kris, Diane, Charlie… you guys are the best!

The team at SlapShot Radio would also like to thank the following folks for their key contributions…
- Our remote producer, Al, for hanging around till the silent auction was complete.
- All the Predator and NHL bloggers that promoted the event and came out to support.
- Bryan Mullen from the Tennessean and Cory Curtis from WKRN who helped get the word out in the traditional media.

The hockey community in Nashville has shown once again how they step up. All of us at SlapShot Radio are incredibly honored to be a small part of it.

The donations were so generous that we couldn’t auction everything off. So we paid it forward and donated the contributions that didn’t make it into the SSR auction to the NHL Nashville Flood Relief Tweetup. That event will take place on Monday night, June 7th at The Tin Roof, on Music Row. This event will benefit the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and is being driven by Pred blogger Mark Willoughby (check his View from 111 blog.) It will be a good time for a great cause.
