Tuesday marked the 10-year anniversary of the Rangers hiring of Glen Sather as the team's president and general manager. The best to describe that decade is that it has been an error rather than an era as the 10 years have been woefully short of success. The period has been marked by bold moves, all of which has led to playoff series wins, a boatload of wasted cash and a legion of disappointed fans.

I quote from Michael Obernauer's column today: "Pavel Bure (though I will admit I liked the trade at the time from a cost versus possible reward perspective), Eric Lindros, Scott Gomez, Wade Redden and many more have helped Sather prove his point that no, you cannot buy a winner. Save for a seventh-rounder named Henrik Lundqvist picked three weeks after he was hired, the GM's draft record was, as in Edmonton in the '90s, a black hole until the move for Marc Staal in 2005 triggered an upswing - though fans like those at a "Fire Sather" rally outside the Garden on March 7 will never let go of 2003, when the Rangers selected big Dartmouth winger Hugh Jessiman at No. 12. In one of the best draft classes ever, Jessiman remains the only player among the top 33 picks never to appear in the NHL." If that does not sum up the ineptitude of the past decade, nothing will. Yet we could add in the hiring of Bryan Trottier, mishandled trade of Brian Leetch to that mix and still have more to talk about.

Rumors have persisted that Sather will give up the GM title and remain as a figurehead. Though one could easily argue that's what he is now as the game and blueprint to build a team has passed him by as seen by the constant shifting of personnel. Glen go quickly into that good night.

I wish that was the biggest downer of the day but word filtered out that Artem Anisimov underwent successful surgery to remove a bone chip on his right wrist Tuesday. The team expects Anisimov, who suffered the injury on May 23 while playing for Russia in the gold medal game of the World Championships in Germany, to make a full recovery in four-to-six weeks. The good news is that the surgery was a success and the expectation is that there shouldn't be any long-term ramifications from the injury.

The Rangers announced that as speculated and reported earlier in the year that the team will have a third jersey. Count me as one of those who liked the Liberty jersey, especially the white one, but as per usual, this is likely another ploy to bleed the consumer of more money. Hopefully as reported by the SNYRangersblog the jersey will not just have the diagonal New York on it as that would have been a complete waste of time. Expect the Garden to have some sort of press conference to show off the jersey and would it be surprising if they either did it at the draft or first their first free agent signing?

Bruce Ciskie of NHL Fanhouse posted his mock draft today and in it he has the Rangers selecting Jeff Skinner, whose coach at Kitchener has compared to Mike Richards. I know of at least one person happy with that selection:) As we all know mock drafts are great to read but obviously need to be taken with a grain of salt. To add some spice to that, B.D Gallof, who most of the Hockey Buzz readers know well and who runs the great Hockey Independent.com site, tweeted today that he wouldn't be surprised if the Islanders took Skinner. If that happened, there could be a war between the blogs.

According to Cap Geek, Jyri Niemi, whom the Rangers acquired last week from the Islanders for a 6th round pick, signed a three year entry level deal worth $595,000 per season with a $70,000 signing. If Niemi spends the year in the AHL, he will make $65k. The dollars seem fine for someone who could be a 6/7 defenseman and he provides the Rangers will some depth.
