After an introspective look at Paul Stastny, the Hockeybuzz Avalanche player reviews continues today with a loot at #27 Kyle Quincey
Season Stats: 79 Games Played, six goals, 23 assists, 29 points
Postseason Stats: six GP, no goals, no assists
Nicknames: BAMF (it's an acronym)
Contract status: RFA
Kyle Quincey is a hard guy to review. He had a good first half of the season and an average-at-best second half.
In the first half, Quincey was paired with Scott Hannan and formed a real shutdown pairing. Quincey was using his size and strength while Hannan was being more of a positional guy. Quincey was picking his spots to pass and making good shots.
Then around late December Quincey started second guessing his instincts and would overpass or put the puck into bad places. He was still functional on defense but he lost a little confidence. Then, coach Joe Sacco benched him for a few games and Quincey lost all his confidence entirely.
Quincey started to get his game back in the second half, specifically after the Olympic break but he was still lacking confidence around the puck.
This second half regression has had some Avs fans saying they should trade Quincey even though he's an RFA and still has his best years ahead of him.
Quincey has all the right tools to be a dominant top four defenseman in this league but he needs to learn when to use them in order to reach his potential.
Highlight of the year
Quincey's check of Steven Stamkos into the bench which led to Stamkos hopping back on for a too man men penalty which led to the game-winning goal is Quincey's highlight of the year.
2010-11 outlook
If there was a betting pool on the Avs' 2010 breakout player, I'd put my money on Quincey. He has the experience, he has the tools, he has the size. If he can put it all together he can be a really dangerous player for the Avs.
