With neither team having anything else to play for, the Edmonton Oilers won their last home game of the season 5-4.
With Paul Stastny, Adam Foote, Scott Hannan, TJ Galiardi, Milan Hejduk and Craig Anderson all getting the night off, the Avs came out quick, getting three goals from Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly and Marek Svatos scored early in the third period.
Then, the Avs, with what might be called their B*Team in, let the Oilers come back in the game and tie the game in the second. They took a lead late in the third and, if not for Cody McLeod's diving shot on net that dribbled through the legs of Jeff Deslauriers and finished by Matt Hendricks, the Oilers would have won in regulation.
The fact that the Avs were pretty much drained from last night, all three of the guys that wore letters for them last night, as well as Craig Anderson makes this game hard to judge.
There was little to no push by the Avs, as if they didn't really want to rub in a blowout victory. However, there are things to note, one of them being Ryan Stoa.
With all of the players up in the pressbox, Stoa played on the top line with Duchene and Chris Stewart and was a non-factor. He's got good size and can shoot pretty well but he's just too slow and doesn't think the game fast enough. He definitely will have to work hard in the offseason to make the club out of camp next year.
Overall, this was a game that was meaningless to the Avs and it was apparent they were okay with just a point. Now they get ready for the Blackhawks on Friday in what could be a playoff preview.
Three Stars
1. Dustin Penner- three point night
2. Cody McLeod- two big plays setting up two big goals
3. Peter Budaj- Despite giving up four goals he was still good for the Avs
Facepalm of the Game
Kyle Quincey gets it for his turnover that led to Ryan Whitney's GWG in OT. Whether the game is meaningless, that's a play that has to be eliminated.
Aaey of the Game
McLeod's stick sweep of the puck that led to the Hendricks goal was the kind of hard-working play we've come to expect from Cody. Great game Cody
