This is going to be a fun week my friends....
This friday night at midnight will commence the Olympic Trade Freeze. It won't mean an end to rumors of course, anymore than the fact you aren't allowed to talk to people before July 1. In this case, teams are allowed to keep talking. In fact they can talk with far greater freedom actually. They can talk to a team without worrying their offer will be used as a negotiating chip and they will never again get a shot at the player who they just drove the price up on.
Ok let's start in Montreal.
The timing on Gainey stepping down will raise many eyebrows. There is no question Gainey has grown weary of this position. I talked to one GM and heard from another team owner who confirmed that Gainey sounded "really tired" over the past year or so.
However, to make this sort of move this close to the deadline implies an impasse to me. A situation between Gainey and ownership where one side simply would not budge. A situation involving a player move before March 3rd.
There are three names who could cause such an impasse. Lecavalier, Price and Plekanec.
On Tim Thomas.
I don't know what you all think, but I certainly don't think Tim Thomas is the problem in Boston. Yes, Rask is playing really well, but Thomas has a save percentage of .915. I am told this is all purely speculative right now. There may be something else about to go down in Boston. Something not on the player side.
On Ethan Moreau...
Down to Pittsburgh and LA and it could happen sooner than later.
On Ponikarovski...
I am hearing the Thrashers are considering bringing him in to play with former linemate Antropov. Makes a ton of sense, and make no mistake about it: The Thrashers are buyers now that they have traded Kovalchuk. They are all about making the playoffs. Also look to Nashville here.
On Ville Leino...
Not in the line-up tonight against NJ after the Flyers struggled in Edmonton and Minnesota to score goals. Very curious. I commended Holmgren on this move and was even told Leino was slated to play with Briere and Carter. Not having him in the line-up this evening is very out of character for the Flyers. Something else may be up here. I don't think the Flyers are done.
On Ray Whitney...
The Sabres and Bruins are the leaders right now. Don't count out LA quite yet though. As Wallin being traded taught us, it is not uncommon for deals to get resurrected.
On Nathan Horton...
The Flames have liked him forever and I am told they are once again talking to Florida. Florida is being very aggressive.
On Dan Hamhuis....
Look for the NJ Devils to make a pitch for Hamhuis to replace Oduya. The Devils made a great deal, but Oduya was definitely a bigger player for the Devils and they simply can't stand put.
On John Madden...
I am hearing that Madden may be on his way out in Chicago, and I will go on the record saying this is a huge mistake. Right now, it is a numbers game, but I was under the impression the experience of all of those Stanley Cup Playoff games in NJ was why Madden was signed. The Hawks are playing great right now and not really needing what it is Madden brings. But the second season is a totally new beast. If Madden is available there are definitley teams I could see getting involved. Teams who have had playoff issues. San Jose and Calgary.
On Corey Schneider...
While I continue to hear the Flyers are likely to extend Emery after the deadline I would not at all be shocked if the Flyers were to make a play for the Canucks goaltender.
On Dan Ellis...
I have heard the Red Wings have interest in signing Ellis this summer. Hard to imagine Nashville would ever trade with Detroit. I could very much see Ellis moved to a team in the playoff run as insurance.
On Teemu Selanne...
Pittsburgh or Buffalo. If he will go... and Saku Koivu could go as well.
On Saku Koivu...
Does Gainey leaving open the door for a return of Saku in the next week or so? I believe it could.
On Martin Biron...
I am told Biron will in all likelihood be moved post Olympics to Buffalo.
On Peter Mueller...
The Bruins are working on this right now I am told...The Thrashers and the Flyers have interest I am told...(The Flyers also were in on Wallin according to some sources.)
I am heading to the Wachovia Center for Flyers/Devils where I will add another blog like this one...

Brendan Burke's funeral is tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton, Mass. They expect close to 1,000 and if it is any indication by the people I talk to, it will be at least that many. Everyone in the NHL is going. GMs, NHL people, players, agents...the list goes on and on.
The Burke's really appreciated all the kindness they have received from the Hockey Community.
