I'm sick and tired of ignoring the 1,000 pound gorilla in the room.
The Buffalo Sabres have a crisis in their crease on nights when
Ryan Miller is resting. Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regier had better address this matter ASAP as their Sabres have frittered away a sizable first place lead that they had built in the season's first four weeks.
Patrick Lalime and
Jhonas Enroth are not the answer moving forward. Miller is going to require more rest as the February Olympic break nears, and it appears painfully obvious to this observer that Buffalo are vulnerable between the pipes on nights when Miller is in street clothes. Playing him 70 times duringthe regular season is not an option with Miller the starting goaler for Team USA at the Vancouver games.
Buffalo are winless in their last three games, 0-2-1. That notwithstanding, Miller laid an uncharacteristic egg against Florida on Wednesday night. Miller made the requisite saves necessary to beat Boston Friday night, however, the offense took the night off. Miller is stoning opponents with his 1.90 GAA and .940 save %. problem is that his teamamates are mesmoried by his Hasek-like proficiency that they forget that they need to score in order to support their goalie. lately, the Sabre forwards seem content to help Miller to defwat opponents 1-0 or 2-1.
Lalime was lit up-- again-- for three goals in the first eight minutes of the third period on Saturday night.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Patrick Lalime is not the answer as back-up goaltender to
Ryan Miller. The guy is a shot fighter with a soft chin. "Friends" was first-run hit TV series the last time Lalime was a relevant NHL goaler. The Sabres playoff hopes are directly related to Lalime's 35 year old groins and hips. Same story as last Spring. he wasn't good enough then, and he's no better now.
Here's what you do:
Get Garth Snow on the phone and offer him Hank Tallinder for Marty Biron straight up. Snow needs a Dman and with
Rick Dipietro returning to his crease in the beat future, the Islanders need to move a goalie.
At the NHL GMs meetings in Tronna earlier this month, the seeds for future deals were sewn. The US Thanksgiving holiday is,generally speaking, the point in the season when most NHL GMs call in their coaches and scouts to take the time and temperature of their respective teams. Were I Darcy Regier, I'd be actively shopping for my new insurance policy. lalime is not the answer, nor is Enroth at this time.
If the Islanders balk at Hank for Marty, I call Ken Holland in Detroit and offer Hank for Jimmy Howard.
I spoke with a Western scout earlier this week who tells me that Holland has interest in Biron, as a back-up and as a challenger to Osgood for the top job in Detroit.
There are goaltending options avaialble to Buffalo. This is subject to change. Will they act swiftly and decisively to fill their need position, or will that stand Pat?
