If you had to make the schedule in a tightened Olympic year would have breaks of five days this early into the season? I wouldn't but I'm thankful we have one, despite an uplifting dominant performance on Saturday night.
There are certainly aches and pains along with the other injuries that can use rest but more importantly it is time for the team to adjust to the return of injured players, and get familiar with the current lines. I was very happy with
Jannik Hansen's game on Saturday and think the bottom six is going to benefit from his return. Hansen is not afraid to get dirty and dig in front, at the side or behind the net. The same places Burrows earned his stripes to play on the top line. Hansen brings that edge and along with Glass and Pettinger these three are starting to play some gritty hard checking hockey. I would go so far as to say that they remind me of the Flames' bottom six- fast on the puck and checking hard. Those two traits were absent from the bottom 6 for most of the first 20 games.
The concerns are now focused on Hordichuk and Wellwood, two players who have grossly underperformed this season. Is there a solution to their playing woes? Other than Hordi taking Kyle to McDonald's buffet and then fighting patrons for their leftovers it's going to take time and some luck with other players improving. Do the two have much value and could they be on the block?
In the end this break may find time for the Canucks to work on some things that have caused trouble so far. It also gives them time to work on things as a lineup that resmbles what should be the correct roster. It's a chance to get familiar with each other again and hopefully provde some stability and more notches in the win column.
Enjoy your break.
