Kovalchuk Update...

While I am told with almost complete certainty that the KHL is not an option, I am also told that Kovalchuk talks are not even getting going yet. Yes all sides are optimistic and saying that the preliminary talks are going well. Both sides are very professional here. Waddell, and Grossman are two of the more admirable in their respected fields. They will likely get this done..

However, this is not sneaking up on us, the fact that we are about 2 months from what could be an incredible, almost unfathomable situation. Kovalchuk on the trade market. Should Atlanta realize that there is no chance, I am told they will definitely move him.

Don't be surprised if we start to hear he is available, even if teams start to bid on his services, and then Kovalchuk signs a long-term deal. I believe Ilya wants to end his career in Atlanta. Deep down, I feel that it will be interesting to see how he would react to be shopped.

Penguins Hibernating May Be Needed

Talking to sources about the current Penguins situation (they are close getting Brunstromm I am told) there is a definite belief that the Penguins current injuries to Malkin and Gonchar may be great blessing come playoff time.

I totally agree. I have to say, having covered the Penguins last two runs in person, that each playoff year I felt that Malkin looked tired to me. He has not yet been the dominant playoff player that he can be. Granted, even a tired Malkin beats all but a dozen players in the NHL, but imagine if he were to be 100% and rested?

Now take into account that the Penguins are going to get hit hard by their key player going to the Olympics it is reasonable to think that an entire 100+ games this year for Malkin could surely take its toll.

The Epic battle to come...

In general, these Olympics I do believe are going to have a HUGE impact on the NHL playoffs. When you talk to the players, this Olympic hockey tournament feels like the hockey tournament to end all hockey tournaments. I have never seen anything like it and team owners in the NHL are terrified by the emphasis that these games are receiving.

There is one thing for sure, for 100% certain....we fans are in for a hell of a ride come the Olympics. The intensity of these games may be at a level we have never seen. The talent on display will set historical precedents.

Leafs in on Phaneuf? Quite Possibly

There are some pretty solid sources today that are saying Brian Burke intends to be very much a player in the Dion Phaneuf sweepstakes.

Nylander to be Loaned to Russian Team?

The endless saga may be ending. I am hearing that Nylander may be "Loaned" to Omsk. Or maybe not..
