A few notes and thoughts before the Leafs game tonight vs Calgary.
Ron Wilson needs to set the team’s alarm clock back an hour or so, because again last night, the Leafs allowed the first goal, on a really bad giveaway to
Patrick Kane by
Luke Schenn and woke up trailing 3-0. At that point, the Leafs played a decent game and made the result close, but this team does not have the offensive firepower to constantly fall behind in games. A Ron Wilson coached team is supposed to be more sound defensively, but so far this season, that has not been the case.
Anyone who looked at
Phil Kessel last night now understands why Brian Burke was so gung ho to acquire him. The two goals he scored were very impressive, the first beating Hawks goaltender
Cristobal Huet stick side from just inside the blue line and the second on a dazzling rush through the offensive zone that concluded with a snap shot that went top shelf. CBC commentator Greg Millen last week made comparisons between Kessel and Hall of Famer Mike Bossy. Whether Kessel will ever reach those lofty heights is something that we will be evaluating for years to come, but one thing is apparent, Kessel will likely have to score goals by himself, because there does not appear to be anyone currently on the Leafs roster who is capable of helping him carry the offensive burden.
