Shoot-Out Loss In Buffalo

This was simply a great game to watch as a fan. Sure the Sabres owned the first and Miikka Kiprusoff was the only reason the period ended tied at one, conversely, the same could be said about the second where the Flames controlled the play but were simply unable to pot the go-ahead goal as Miller stole the show. It was a great game with chances at both ends where both goalies showed why they are considered among the elite puck-stoppers in the NHL.

So the Flames win streak ends at four as well as Iginla's goal streak. Funny how even though the team isn't so reliant on Iginla as their sole generator of offense that the two steaks coincide...

Rene Bourque picked up an assist on the lone Flames goal as he continues his great start to the season but he was also robbed on a short-handed break-away by Ryan Miller that would have given the Flames a 2-1 lead. It was one of many big saves by the Sabres puck-stopper who continues to impress this season and who many think may taking over the conversation of who should start for The US at the Olympics this year. He currently leads the NHL with a minuscule 1.75 GAA.

Not to be outdone, Kiprusoff actually made more saves as the Sabres outshot the Flames 33-26 although his biggest save likely came off of the opening face-off in overtime as the Sabres has a quick two on one as Roy stole the puck after Jokinen won the draw as set up Pominville who had a great chance to end it but was stonewalled by Kipper. Of course Pominville did get the last laugh as he eventually scored the shoot-out winner.

All in all it was another gritty, physical, well played road game by the Flames that despite the tough first showed that they now seem to understand what it takes to compete on the road. After all, this is a team that has struggled mightily away from home in recent seasons as it has been unable to find any sort of consistency in its play away from the friendly confines of the Dome. Right now the Flames road record is a very good 5-1-2. Compare that to the 05/06 record of 16-18-7, the 06/07 record of 13-20-8, the 07/08 record 21-19-1, and the 08/09 record of 19-20-2 and the Flames have only been above .500 once since the lock-out... And that was a mere two games above .500 in 07-08. If nothing else, the Flames have definitely been playing more competitive hockey on the road thus far which bodes well for them as they continue their road trip tonight against the Leafs where they haven't posted a victory since 2000.

An interesting side-note to tonight's game is that both teams will be going in on the second game of back-to-back games instead of one team waiting for the other as is usually the case. It'll be interesting to see which team is able to handle the grind better.

Have a great day!
