A Mess in the NHLPA...

Will the last one left please turn out the lights?

Another weekend, another conference call, another resignation as interim NHLPA Ombudsman Buzz Hargrove resigned from the NHLPA after a tumultuous eight months in the role … Allen Maki in the Globe and Mail had a great line saying that the NHLPA was “starting to give banana republics a bad name.” Funny, and very true.

Hargrove joins six other resignations over the past two weeks including executive director Ian Penney as the NHLPA rapidly denigrates even further, to a back-biting, conspiracy theory laden, impotent group that seems to only exist for the drama it produces, and to collect a LOT of dues. Between ombudsman hiring and firing, executive director firing, hiring, and firing, the formation of a “review committee” that seems to be on a witch hunt… sheesh, I wonder when the NHLPA will hire Luke, Laura and Robert Scorpio to fix things?

Can it be that hard to run a union with less than a thousand members?

Given all that has happened, questions need to be asked… Has the NHLPA’s time passed? Is it still relevant? Is it time to blow the whole thing up and start over?

Many questions… very few answers.

The Predators continue their west coast swing, completing the California trifecta tomorrow night in San Jose before closing the roadie with a visit to St. Louis. While the Preds conclude the trip, NHL general managers will meet in Toronto to discuss several hot topics including the trapezoid and head shots.
