Ryan Miller had earned a night of. He'd played in twelve of Buffalo's first thirteen games this season. Lindy Ruff need to burnout and deplete his starting goaler in the first week of Novemeber. There are many more battle and tens of thousands of miles of travel to go in this young season.
Patty Lalime's wonky hip/groin combo has set off a Code Red alert, the likes of which Sabreland hasn't seen since last Spring. Sabre fan has sat through the torturous ending of that horror movie, and he cares not to see that gory ending again.
Jhonas Enroth is a good kid and a solid goalie. His only flaw is that he's not an NHL goalie yet. He's in Portland for a reason. He's learning the proverbial ropes by riding the buses while learning the tricks of the his trade. The NHL is not the Swedish Elite Leagie for the World Juniors. Its the best collection of hockey players in the world. Thats why I really felt for the kid on Saturday night. He wanted to impress his coach and teammates just as much as they wanted him to steal a victory. Didn't happen. Enroth's heart rate was soaring at the start and by the time he knew what had hit him, two Boston goals had clunked in behind him. The goals were not his fault at all. The reason they eluded Enroth is simple: failure was not an option for the Bruins. They had played three games form 11/1-11/5 and only scored ONE goal, while suffering two shutouts in the process. Boston threw everything at the net, including the skate sharpener, and the strategy worked. Enroth is good, however, he ain't
that good to dig his mates out of a 2-0 hole, while on the road, facing an angry Bruins team in their den.
Coach Ruff said afterwards that he has not like the laissez faire approach that his team has taken its last three games. In fact, he eluded to "the old me", in assessing the recent funk. Ruff said that his former self would have been more irrate at the past three performances, however, he felt that it would be unwise and unfair to break the dinner dishes and bust the windows on the team buses at this juncture. The coach has meelowed with age. He knows that his team has had a touch of the flu and it needs some rest. He'll re-group his team for a Monday afternoon practice in preparation for the Edmonton game in Buffalo on Wednesday night.
You'll see Miller back in the pipes for the forseeable future. Will Lalime be ready to answer the bell the next time that Miller needs a breather? Groins and hips are serious problem areas for 35 year goalies who have logged a lot of NHL minutes. Personally, I don't think Lalime is the stop gap. Ditto Enroth. Were I the GM, I'd have upgraded the bullpen in the offseason. When Gomez wiped out Miller last February, it became abundantly clear in Sabreland that the back up spot was a concern.
Scott Clemmensen ran the table for the Devils when Brodeur suffered his injury last season. The Devs barely missed a beat, and in doing so, Brodeur was allowed ample time to heal and recover. Their back up had buoyed the rocking ship.
Is there such an NHL goalie available to the Sabres by trade right now?

Captain Drury has been concussed and will be lost for a while.
Last night, 49 ticks into the game in Calgary,
Curtis Glencross of the Flames demolished Drury with an atomic elbow to the chin, while Dru was not looking. He never saw the hit coming, ala the
Chris Neil hit on Drury way back when.
The concussion is Drury's third of his career.
