Caps 7 - Panthers 4

- Theo made 24 saves on 28 shots, good enough for the win, but not his best performance.

- Knuble led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists. The 4 point performance is Knuble's best as a Cap and the fact that he had a hand in all 3 of the Capitals final goals, including assisting on the game winner, tells you how important Mike has become to this team.

- Flash, Laich and Backstrom each pocketed 2 points in the victory. Flash had 2 goals, including the game winner, while Backstrom set up a pair and Laich notched a goal and an assist.

- 8 other Capitals had points on the night, but none more important than Mathie Perreault. Perreault, who is in only his 3rd NHL game, registered his first goal in the big leagues tonight when he beat Scott Clemmensen with a nice wrister. Congrats Matt! May your first NHL goal be the start of a great career.

- On the flip side of tonight's 7-4 demoltion of the Panthers, Milan Jurcina somehow managed to be a -4 and Alex Semin spent most of the night chasin his shadow as he collected 2 shots and 4 penalty minutes in a mere 14:19 of ice time.

- All in all it was a pretty strong effort from a team that had to play less than 24 hours ago in Florida. Thankfully it was against the same team and the Caps were able to walk away with 4 very important points.

- And...don't forget! This team managed to pull off back-to-back wins versus a divisional rival(although it is a struggling Panthers team) without Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin(for the most part) and Mike Green and Jeff Schultz. Kudos to the supporting cast.

Nylander in NHL Purgatory

He has been beaten.

After extending his demise to the last possible moment, Michael Nylander has waved the white flag and has allowed George McPhee to waive him. This move will place Mike in Hershey and at the mercy of any decision the club wishes to make.

In other words, Nylander waving his NMC to pass through waivers means Michael does not want to wait in limbo anymore.

IF there is or isn't a team waiting on the other side of this move, it doesn't seem to matter anymore.

Which is too bad.

Nylander just wants to play and help a team that can use him. He has been cast aside now and it's too bad because he could be a valuable piece to a team in need of that extra push.

It is uncertain as to whether Michael will pass through re-entry waivers as that means and the Capitals will remain on the hook for half of the rest of Nylander's contract, handcuffing Washington's cap by $2.4 million this year and next.

I can guarantee you one thing; if Michael hits re-entry it is on the request of another team. The only way that happens is if a trade is arranged to coincide with it.

Otherwise, it seems like Nylander may indeed be looking at a move to Europe or Russia.

I know that I said that it was a 90% no on Nylanders behalf, but it seems that all options have been exhausted and that Michael himself is tired. He does not want to put himself through the waiting and he doesn't need to have his family waiting idly by.

I have spoken around with quite a few people and have gotten the names of a few teams that are interested. Detroit, Toronto, Los Angeles and 2 "other" clubs are considering Nylander.

That said, it seems that the interest remains solely on re-entry waivers and not an outright trade.

We will certainly find out more about this tomorrow and I will bring you any and all information that I can get.

- Just as an interesting side note...I noticed that Jason Williams and Chris Drury both left their games tonight with injuries. I am not sure how severe the injuries are, but I do know that the Red Wings cannot afford another injury and that the Rangers are in serious trouble if Drury is out for an extended period. I would not add the Rangers to the mix of teams interest in Nyls just yet, but don't be surprised to hear it if Chris is out long-term. As for the Wings...they are still the only team who has had the best chance to scout Nylander and they are the one team I can see needing him pronto. Nothing more than hearsay on my part, but definitely something to consider.

...Also...what decade is this when the Toronto Maple Leafs manhandle the Detroit Red Wings, 5-1? It's nice to see the Leafs turning things around but what about the Red Wings, how far will they fall? Is it possible, even remotely, that Detroit could miss the playoffs???

Back with more tomorrow.
