Kings Streak Ends as Nashville Upsets 3-1

Letdown? Playing Down to Competition? 1:00 start? The Kings began the game so sluggishly Terry Murray called a timeout halfway through the first period.

It didn’t help.

The Kings began the 2nd period with a 5 on 3. They wound up with 4 shots on goal for the entire frame. The penalty kill, which had stopped 26 of the last 29, gave one up to Francis Bouillon… his first of the season.

For the third time this week, the Kings entered the 3rd period on the losing end. This time their momentum was stopped by a Cody Franson goal with just under five minutes in.

Jarret Stoll got the Kings back in the game with a PP goal (assisted by Kopitar) but then just over a minute later Jonathan Quick allowed a lousy wrap around by Joel Ward. Quick looked outstanding at times but 3 goals on 22 shots does not a playoff goaltender make.

Asked if there were anything positive to take from this game, an unhappy Terry Murray replied, "Nope". (Nashville) beat us from the dots to the boards and every area of the ice tonight"

"We didn't have very many guys working consistently," captain Dustin Brown said. "Guys have to look in the mirror tonight and learn from. It's definitely a wake up call."

The Kings 6-0-2 streak ends as they head back out on the road for five straight.

Stoll’s power play goal was the first in 5 games for the Kings.

Once a Kings fan, always a Kings fan: I fully expect the Carolina Hurricanes to run their losing streak to 11 straight tonight… before beating the Kings on Wednesday.

Maybe the NHL can explain something – since the game wasn’t on TV in L.A. or Nashville, the TV timeout became a radio timeout. So how come radio fans missed Jarret Stoll’s goal live?

Where’s Gretzky?
A few weeks ago Kings GM Dean Lombardi hinted that he would be asking Wayne Gretzky to come back to the Kings in some sort of capacity. We haven’t heard anything recently but Lombardi has been telling reporters that the great one has asked that if there is something to be done in the future, it should be kept out of the press, a request Lombardi has been honoring.

Gretzky is still upset at the NHL, but there’s been no word if he’ll be appearing in Toronto to honor his many friends who are being inducted into the hall of fame.

An apology
Sometimes I sit in the press box. The view isn’t as good, I can’t drink beer and I can’t cheer, but I get an excellent perspective of how those who cover the game view the game.

Sometimes I sit in my season seats. The view is dead center ice, I can drink beer and something called the “Suffering Bastard” at Trader Vic’s, I can yell all game long, cheer when we score and I get a first hand view from a fans perspective.

During the exciting Pittsburgh game, I was entertaining some people and we went for some celebratory drinks following the game. Then I came home and wrote the last blog in which I described a dedicated serviceman who was honored before the game as a feminine hygiene product because he was caught on camera waving a Pittsburgh towel.

I woke up at 6am L.A. time realizing I have a responsibility to the Kings organization, Hockeybuzz, and the fans and I revised my game report. Unfortunately several fans correctly took offense to my writings. I realize I write with an edge, that’s my style. But to write while “happy” is not proper conduct.

I apologize to the honoree, those who were offended and to the Kings…
