Dion Phaneuf's billiard shot at 2:50 of the extra frame vaulted the Flames to their second OT victory on consecutive nights as the team was able to put forward a decent road effort against a St. Louis club that has struggled on offense.
In fact, the Blues were within mere minutes of setting a new franchise record for scoreless time when they were finally able to beat
Miikka Kiprusoff with 12:45 left in the third period to tie the game at one after
Jarome Iginla put the Flames ahead early in the first. In fact, when they scored their current streak ended at 171 minutes and 5 seconds a mere 8 minutes and 49 seconds short of the team's longest run of 179 minutes and 54 minutes from march 7-13 way back in 1971.
Not only have the Flames seemed to have reversed their historical trend of struggling in extra time in recent seasons but last night they were also successful in a second game of a back-to-back situation which as any fan will tell you has caused problems for the Flames in the last few years.
The shots were even at 31-31 and despite the fact the the Flames starter was feeling under the weather the past few days and it wasn't known who would man the net until shortly before game-time Kipper certainly stood tall between the pipes, particularly in the second period when he was rock solid during a lengthy 5-3 advantage and stopped a total of 16 shots overall in the middle frame.
It's another tough loss of many early this season for the Blues who opened the season with bigger expectations after being a surprise play-off team last season but they've been unable to recapture the way they were able to come together so well as a team last year to make their run at a play-off spot.
As for the Flames, despite the fact that they still clearly aren't firing on all cylinders on offense, the fact that Jarome is starting to find his grove and the team is starting to become more consistent definitely have to be viewed as positives as the team is off to a more than respectable 9-4-1 start which may only put them in 3rd place in the Northwest division at this point but keep in mind that they hold games in hand over every other team in the division.
It's another short break for the team as next up is a Saturday night meeting with the Rangers at the dome for the last game on Hockey Night In Canada.
Have a great day!
