Home, home again. I like to be here when I can.
That's about what the Avs were saying tonight as they won 4-1 over the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Avs looked re-energized and every bit the club that's leading the Western Conference standings tonight, getting goals from
Milan Hejduk (2),
Marek Svatos and
David Jones (EN).
This is one of those games that the score doesn't tell you anything about the actual game itself. Jones and the second Hejduk goal were both scored within the last minute of the game, Hejduk's after Jones' empty netter put the game out of reach.
This was a very hard-fought, defensive, physical game. Both
Ilya Bryzgalov and
Peter Budaj were solid in net and none of the goals that beat them were any bit their fault.
The Avs used their speed to get their offense rolling and push the tempo. It worked as it kept the Coyote's defense from cheating up too far and kept the Avs from being trapped in their own zone.
Cody McLeod made his return to the lineup tonight and paid immediate dividends. McLeod is pure energy and when he's in the lineup, the team just plays better. He's probably the most unique player on the Avs as he's a power forward/grinder mix who can bring defense and offense, physicality and great passing. He's just pure energy and the Avs missed him dearly.
Another thing McLeod does is give his linemates space. His size and speed combination allowed Matt Duchene to use his speed to make plays. He also keeps teams from taking runs at him without any sort of response. McLeod is absolutely necessary for this team to be good and is irreplaceable. The line with him, Duchene and
Marek Svatos was by far the best over the course of the game.
Overall though, that Avs got a great effort from everyone except
Wojtek Wolski,
Chris Stewart and
T.J. Hensick. All three players glided through this game as though the didn't care and Wolski was just asking to be benched.
Outside of those three, it was a good effort by the Avs who got back to the basics of their game, simplified things and, in turn, played their best game since their shutout of Edmonton a week ago and Hensick makes any line he plays on the "Cash for Clunkers" line.
Three Stars
1.
Milan Hejduk- two goals and an assist tonight for the Duke of Colorado.
2.
Paul Stastny- three assists tonight, matching his point total over the last road trip.
3.
Cody McLeod- breathed new life into this Avs club and was key in all three zones.
Facepalm of the game
The case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Wolski continues to happen. Wolski can be dominant on some nights but tonight he looked like he just wanted to go back to bed. How long will Wolski continue with this play before he finds himself wearing a different sweater?
