Blue Jackets 5 - Capitals 4(OT)

- For now, the only upside to the Caps loss tonight is the fact that they have earned points in 8 straight games(14 pts in 8 straight games) while Mike Green increased his point streak to 9 games with an assist. Other than that, the absence of Ovechkin from the Capitals lineup left the team in shell-shock and forced Bruce Boudreau to juggle his lines. Fortunately the Caps played well, for a bit, while Alex was gone, but once again the defensive lapses kicked in and cost Washington another game that they were 2 minutes away from winning.

Ovechkin Injury Update

A major reason for the topsy-turvy Capitals performance this afternoon was the fact that Alex Ovechkin left the game early in the 2nd period with, what appeared to be, an upper-body injury.

Here is the release from the Capitals Director of PR, Nate Ewell:

Alex Ovechkin suffered an upper-body injury in the 2nd period and is day-to-day. The Capitals have a day off tomorrow so the soonest we will have an update on his status is Tuesday.

While that sounds rather ambiguous, it does not appear that OV will be out too long as he seemed to alright during post-game interviews.

Ovechkin initially tweaked(it appears) his left shoulder in a collision with Jason Chimera early in the 2nd. It did not seem to be an out of the ordinary type play, yet immediately following the run-in Alex made a bee-line for the Caps bench and did not return.

Ovechkin offered up this tidbit to Tarik El-Bashir following the game:

"...I can't tell you how I got hurt. It's day to day, but just in case I didn't go back on the ice."

To read more of Ovechkin's post-game comments, check out the Caps Insider.

Obviously there isn't too much to worry about as Alex's injury doesn't appear to be much more than a muscle strain or spasm, even a bruise, and should be good to go for the Caps next game.

I will be back with more on the game and OV's injury status(just in case it turns out to be more than the left winger seems to think it is) in the morning.
