12:42 update - Jeff Moeller from the Kings was kind enough to grab some quotes:
Also, thanks to all who pointed out Jones is from from New Brunswick, not Newfoudland - I've sent the correction to the Kings
Q: Can you talk about the addition of Jones?
A: It gives us the appropriate depth at a critical position as we just
weren't comfortable with what we had at this time. We have some of our
young guys who aren't ready to play or take on a certain role and this
just gives us the type of depth we feel we need to get through a long
season. Inevitably injuries are going to happen; sporadically it's going
to happen and Randy is going to play and he's going to get his game
back. We are comfortable with our six guys, for the matter, and even
Martinez, but we wanted to acquire a guy through this vehicle. It was a
move for depth that we couldn't pass up.
Q: Can you talk about his strengths as a player?
A: He's really a blend as a player. He's a good defensive player but he
also moves the puck well so he's a blend player that we call a partial
defensive guy and partial offensive guy. So he can chip in for the
offense but he also provides us with another solid guy in the back.
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have claimed defenseman
Randy Jones off of re-entry waivers, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced Thursday.
The Kings have also placed defenseman
Alec Martinez on the injured reserve list (retroactive to October 5) due to an ankle injury.
Jones, 28, has played in six games this season with the Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League, recording one point (an assist) and six penalty minutes.
Last season, Jones played in 47 games with the Philadelphia Flyers, recording eight points (4-4=8) and 22 penalty minutes. He also played in six playoff games with the Flyers and he played in two regular season games with the Phantoms.
The 6-2, 200-pound native of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, has been in the Philadelphia organization the last seven years. In 217 career regular season NHL games, he has 69 points (13-56=69) and 134 penalty minutes. He also has appeared in 22 career playoff games with the Flyers, recording three points (all assists) and four penalty minutes.
