Tough Loss

The team you're playing is in the second game of a back-to-back situation. They are on a huge roll to start the season, but many pundits feel that it's only a matter of time until their bubble bursts. Sure their goalie has been putting up some gaudy numbers that have set franchise records for continuous starts and October wins but it's merely a mirage, a game of smoke and mirrors and misdirection and the facade will fade soon...

So what's the remedy for a hot team as described above? Clearly getting off to a quick start should deflate the opponent and maybe add a little extra strain to their weary legs. Of course keeping the shots down will optimize your chances of success, and of course playing a consistent sixty minutes should pave the way for a victory.

The Flames successfully seemed to cover all those bases, so what went wrong?

They set a franchise record with their fastest two goals from the start of the game. They limited the Avs to a paltry fourteen shots while getting thirty-two shots on Avs puck-stopper Craig Anderson and had an additional nineteen blocked by the Avs skaters, and despite the fact that they couldn't come away with the victory, they did play a pretty solid team game which has been an issue at times early this season.

Chalk this one up to a hot goalie, a timely goal, and a case of puck-luck just not being in your favor. There's no two ways about it. Yes many shots were from the outside and maybe the Flames were unable to get into quality scoring spots as much as they wanted, but simply put Craig Anderson showed up as advertised. This after-thought is quickly becoming one of the big stories this season and as of right now, he doesn't show any signs that he's going to fade any time soon. Coming into the season Colorado's goaltending was considered a huge question mark. At this point, Mr. Anderson is providing all the answers.

Yes the two early Calgary goals put the Avs a little on their heels and they continued to pressure for the rest of the game but a combination of circumstances at the right time that led to Wojtek Wolski's goal was the kind of timely marker that confident teams seem to score. Wolski's quick assessment of the situation in noticing that the Flames were flat-footed and his subsequent slip of the forwards and move to make the shot not only caught the Flames off-guard but propelled his Avs to the victory. Of course any goal that puts a team ahead late is deflating for the opponent, but when it comes on a play that you just know is going to be played on every sports show as one of the highlights of the night it gives the dagger and extra twist. It was a timely goal for a hot team and the Flames were unable to counter it.

Sometimes the bounces simply don't go your way. Sure it could easily be argued that the Flames deserved a better fate in this game but ask any Oiler fan that saw the first two BOA's in Edmonton this year and it's easy to remember that the Flames have had some fortunate victories this year as well. Take the positives and move on!

Have a great day!
