On Sunday night during the first period of the Columbus/Kings game, Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi dropped down into a crouch and upended Blue Jackets winger Jason Chimera.

No penalty was called on the play but after a review by the NHL they deemed it an illegal hit and fined Scuderi an undisclosed amount.

Reporters caught up with Scuderi following practice today before their flight to San Jose.

"I got a call from Colin Campbell yesterday, and he expressed to me that he thought the hit was a bit low," Scuderi began. "At the time, I hadn’t seen it yet. I did see it later in the day, and I wish I could disagree with his judgment, but it was low," Scuderi admitted.

"I’ve had a lot of hip checks the last few years, but that one wasn’t right. It was definitely in a questionable area, and I have to pay my fine." When asked how mich the fine was, Scuderi replied, "I honestly have no idea. It's the first time I've ever been involved in anything remotely controversial. If anything, I’m more disappointed in myself, because I’ve always played hard but I’ve always played fair and honest, so it’s not the way I want to be seen as playing in this league. Fortunately for me, Chimera wasn’t hurt any more.”

When asked if he had contacted Chimera to offer an apology, Scruderi added, “Yeah, I've been trying to get his number for a little bit. All I can do is give him a call and extend the apology. It’s up to him if he wants to accept it or not. I understand if he’s mad. All I can do is offer it up.”

We also asked coach Murray if after watching the video replay of the hit he still thought it was legal.

"Absolutely", he said with a smile. "That was THE hit of the game," Murray emphasized. "When you go back through the start of my career. The 70s, 60s, that was the hit. Because you had both wingers coming back on the defensive side of it, and that’s where your defensemen were always standing up and able to get those kind of impact hits. It’s a great play. He’s fronting the man that’s carrying the puck. The puck gets chipped in and immediately the hit is there. It’s a good hit.”

While Chimera was griping to the press about what a dirty hit Scuderi had put on him, he failed to admit during the latter part of the game he punched the back of Alexander Frolov's helmet causing it to fly off his head. I asked Murray if he thought the tape had been sent to the league and if not, why not?"

“I didn't question that. It's a hockey play. It's two teams playing hard. The game is over at that time whenever that play happened and its a team that's not happy with how they played and I'm sure their coach (Hitchcock), I know him very well, what would be the message that's being sent to the players."

"I don’t have any problem with that. We want to play hard, we want to play heavy. We need to recognize though, whenever things go the other way a little too much, one of the areas that we grew big time in last year was the response of the team whenever something happened with a particular player, or situations that started to build up, and everybody was there for everybody. You just have to kind of pile in there and say, `Hey, we’re not going to put up with that stuff.’ Maybe that’s one of the scenarios that I wish we had responded just a little bit more with that attitude, at that time. We’ll be aware of it again.”

Jonathan Quick is scheduled to start both the San Jose and Vancover back-to-back games.

Justin Williams skated today for 30 minutes and felt "pretty good" but "felt it towards the end". He is not making the trip to San Jose. Murray said he will be re-evaluated after the skate on Thursday morning to see if he's ready to play against Vancouver.

When asked if Williams has lost his job to Wayne Simmonds, Murray laughed and replied, "My whole coaching philosophy throughout my whole coaching career was a player never loses his position to injury."

MRI on Jon Bernier proved to be negative and he will start in Manchester this weekend after taking a shot off the wrist.

Alec Martinez is still suffering from a high ankle sprain and has been receiving treatment. No timetable has been set for his return.

I caught up with newest Kings member, Scott Parse who in two games already has two assists. I asked what the difference was between playing in Manchester and the NHL." It's faster. Even in practices, I have to be more intense." When asked where he was when he got the call, he said with a smile, "I was at my apartment in Manchester. Coach called me and I had about an hour to go to the rink, pick up my gear, pack a suitcase and get to the airport."

I asked if he were to stick around what happens to all of his stuff, his apartment or if he had any pets that needed to be taken care of. "No animals but my stuff is back there," then he remembered, "Oh, rent is coming up actually, I have to call my roomate!"
