Adrian Dater's blog and the rest of the Denver Post's site have a faction of posters who believe that Matt Duchene is a bust.
One poster indeed posted that he was the "most overrated" third overall pick ever. First of all, how about putting Scott Thornton or Chris Gratton or maybe even Radek Bonk on that list? How about Aki Berg?
Back to the matter at hand, Duchene is far from a bust. In person he's humble but very, very confident of his abilities. He also has tremendous speed, great hands and great work ethic. One thing remains a constant in this game: if you work hard, you'll stick around in this league for a while.
If a player always works hard, putting in hours to improve his deficiencies and even to improve what he's already good at, he'll find a place to play. On and off the ice, Duchene fulfulls this element. He's just as happy to come back and play defensively as he is to jump into the offensive play. Away from the game, he works out hard, and also works on his shortcomings. For example, when the season started, Duchene was winning about 20% of his faceoffs and also getting tossed from the circle a lot. Now, he's been improving and has won that magical 50% number the past two games.
Now, that's the recipe for a good player. For a player of Matt's calibre, he must also have a lot of skill to go along with work ethic. There's few around the league who will say Duchene lacks skill. He's the fastest player I've seen since Pavel Bure, rivaled only by Patrick Kane. He can just take one step and be at full speed, giving defenders an "oh crap" moment.
Duchene also possesses an incredible shot. Those who refute that, just go ask Trevor Cann, the goaltender who Duchene nearly broke his collar bone, with a wrist shot. Duchene has incredible power on that shot. He can't get it off in the same space Sakic but then again who can?
Duchene has all the skills to become a great NHL player, no matter what the doubters say, it's a matter of him figuring out how and when to use them. When he figures it out, he's going to really, REALLY fun to watch.
And if there's another doubter out there, here's a quote from Red Wings coach Mike Babcock from the Denver Post about the kid.
"He looks for real to me. He did things in the two games that I watched that you're not allowed to do unless you are Pav (Pavel Datsyuk) or Z (Henrik Zetterberg)," Babcock said.
First NHL Goal
Here's a video of Duchene's entire shift in which he scored his first NHL goal:
