Gm 5 At Tam: Got caught stealin'

When Cam Ward managed to get the Canes out of the 1st period tied at 0 after the team was outshot and outplayed, I had a good feeling about this game. And when Rod Brind'Amour scored a big goal late in the 2nd period to climb back even at 2, you had to like the Canes chances to steal a point or even 2 with just 1 good period against a Lightning team still trying to find its way. But in the end, I think the hockey gods got it right and starting with a weird board carom that led to the winning goal they awarded both of the 2 points to the team that was better. And the Canes will have to wait at least another 2 games to climb above .500 on the season.

This is probably 1 of those games where you mostly need to give Tampa some credit for playing a decent game and capitalizing on the schedule and move on. After a night off waiting at home yesterday, the Lightning had the jump early and mostly throughout, and the Canes looked just a little slow many times after playing and traveling last night. Give Tampa credit for taking advantage of home ice.

The game featured a couple of the regular problems for the Canes this season. The team continues to take too many of the unnecessary variety of penalty. Thanks to an improving penalty kill, that in itself did not bury the Canes. But the 'more jump' issue did the team in in the end.

There were a couple positives:

1) Ward came real close to stealing a hockey game with his play in the front part of the game. No problems here.

2) Eric Staal played his best period of offensive hockey of the season in the 3rd period and that was after notching a goal in the 2nd period.

3) So far the Canes seem to be at least getting by with Joni Pitkanen. Hopefully they get him back soon.

If you look at a slightly bigger picture, I call this a good week. The team righted the ship to some degree after an 0-2 start and picked up 4 of 6 points. Next up is a Penguins revenge matchup at home on Wednesday.

Go Canes!
