Andy Strickland reports that Armstrong has signed a 2-way deal with the Blues.
Effectively known as "Army",
Derek Armstrong didn't want to return to SC Bern in the Swiss league. He had an offer from Vancouver which he turned down and obviously didn't want to wait for Dean Lombardi and the Kings to figure out if
Trevor Lewis was ready or not for 4th line duties.
Not that centering
Raitis Ivanans and
Kevin Westgarth seemed all that inviting.
Traded from the Rangers in July of 2002, Armstrong had a solid 1st season with the Kings scoring 12 goals and 26 assists in just 66 games.
This impressed then Kings coach Andy Murray who continued to use Armstrong in all sorts of positions. Always working hard and giving 100%, his style fit perfectly with Andy Murray's all-out-all-the-time style of play.
Now reunited with his former coach, this seemed the best way for Derek to fight for more ice time, something he wasn't about to get in Vancouver or Los Angeles.
One thing will be for certain in the Blues locker room. Nobody will be able to beat him at ping pong.
Class act, Derek.
