Summertime Drama Part 2

Looks like we can add another chapter to the summertime drama… this time it’s in Chicago... again!

Sun Media in Canada is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks are being investigated for circumventing the CBA in the team’s contract with Marian Hossa. The concern is the fact is that the last four years of Hossa’s contract is only worth a total of $3.5 million. Those last four contract years cover when Hossa is age 39-42. The NHL is investigating if a discussion of retirement in the last few years of the contract took place. The CBA does state that if a player retires during a contract, the cap hit goes away.

Neat little trick… Hossa could make almost $60 million over eight years, Chicago would only see a cap hit of about $42 million over that time… nice way of getting rid of $20 million in cap hit.

The complete story is available at… http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Chicago/2009/07/30/10319376-sun.html

If Chicago is found to have not followed the CBA they are subject to a $5 million fine and loss of a draft pick. I bet they try and blame this on Dale Tallon too...
