What if…: Quebec Traded Lindros to the Rangers Instead of the Flyers?

FACTS: The year is 1991. The Nordiques have just drafted Eric Lindros first overall in the draft. As we know, Eric refuses to play for them. Although they want to make him sit until he suits up for them, the Nordiques, under pressure from the league, look to deal Lindros. Now, the oft overlooked twist in this whole process is that the Nords actually had agreed to deals with BOTH Philly and the Rangers. An arbitrator had to step in and rule as to who actually had a deal in place with Quebec, and it was he who decided that the Philly deal was the one that stood. Lets take a look at the two deals:

Philly Offer: Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, a 1993 1st round pick (Jocelyn Thibault), a 1994 1st round pick (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals - Nolan Baumgartner) and $15,000,000 cash.

Rangers Offer: Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, John Vanbiesbrouck, three first round picks (1993, 1994 & 1995) and $12,000,000.

WHAT IF #2: What if the arbitrator had ruled in favour of the Rangers, not the Flyers?

The implications of this one are HUGE for all three teams. I have my own personal feelings about how this one would have played out, but I’m much more interested in what you guys think. Hypothesize away folks! I’m very interested to see what you come up with! (BTW, a piece of useless info here: The arbitrator in this case was named Larry Bertuzzi. Mr Bertuzzi just so happens to be the brother of current NHLer Todd Bertuzzi’s grandfather)

Cheers!
