Playoffs Bound: Can the Rangers Hold 7th?

Basically this season has been a virtual bipolar disorder for us loyal Blueshirt fans. "We have a great team! Wait, no they are awful… We can beat anyone! Uggh, nope they are atrocious," these statements could be sprinkled throughout the season. Yet, in the end they came through clinching their post season berth in the 81st game of the season. Hey at least it didn't take them 82 right?

Two games ago it seemed that this team was about to crash and burn right out of the playoffs. Ranger fans everywhere were making alternative plans for the rest of April. Then with two huge wins we all are canceling those plans… there's playoff hockey to watch.

On Tuesday Chris Drury woke up and remembered, oh yeah I play hockey and scored two goals in the most important game of the season. The Rangers who were able to take advantage of a rusty Carey Price got some much needed space between them and the Florida Panthers who lost against the Flyers the same night.

Going into last night's final home game of the season, the Rangers knew they just needed 2 points and they clinched. It was Henrik Lundqvist who emerged and denied the Flyers all but one goal in a shining 37 save performance. The Rangers for the 4th year in a row will be going to the playoffs.

As relief spreads among us we can all finally breathe without that tight feeling in our chests. Well until the playoffs start that is. With the win over the Flyers last night the Rangers slid right into 7th place in a tie with the Montreal Canadiens, but an extra win gives the Rangers the lead.

As the Eastern Conference has finally shaken out and all eight teams have been chosen the Rangers still need to maneuver for placement. Both the Rangers and Canadiens have just one game left, the Rangers will finish of in Philadelphia and the Habs have to play against Pittsburgh. Once again the Rangers have control over their own destiny.

A win this Sunday clinches 7th place and a date against the 2nd seeded Washington Capitals. Otherwise the Rangers will have to play the first place Boston Bruins. Neither seems too appetizing but that's what the playoffs are about. It only gets harder now.

So who would you rather play? The Bruins played a tightly defensive game last weekend and completely disrupted the Rangers offensive game. Goalie Tim Thomas is the leading favorite for the Vezina trophy and has been impressive all season long.

Then over in the nation's capitol you have Alexander Ovechkin who scares the bejesus out of everyone. Could the Rangers even hope to stop such a monster?

It's a tough dilemma. Personally I think the Rangers need to secure 7th and hope and pray they can exploit the Capitals defense and goaltender while somehow Hank can shut down the mighty AO. Quite a tall order.

We'll take a closer look at the match ups after the weekend decides who the Rangers will actually play. One thing is for sure, the Rangers need to fix the power play otherwise we can start making plans real soon.

Either way here's to playoff hockey.
