According to Pierre LeBrun on tonight's Satellite Hot Stove on Hockey Night in Canada, Evgeni Malkin will not face a suspension for his hit on LA Kings winger Wayne Simmonds. Though LeBrun says that sources close to Malkin have told him that Geno was fined and given a stern talking too by Colin Campbell.
So, though Malkin did take some heat from Don Cherry during the broadcast for being another "European" who got away with something because of "who he is," Malkin will be in the line-up when the Penguins meet the Flyers on NBC at 12:30.
I will be live at Mellon Arena bringing you all of the action tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully you can join me.
Evgeni Malkin Has Disciplinary Phone Meeting With the League...
Evgeni Malkin, who is working towards his first Art Ross Trophy and a strong candidate for the Hart Trophy that goes to the league's MVP, made headlines for a different reason this morning. He had to participate in disciplinary hearing via phone following the team's practice at South Pointe this morning.
The league is investigating Malkin's hit on Los Angeles winger Wayne Simmonds in the final minute of the Penguins' 4-1 win last night at Mellon Arena.
I personally didn't see the hit live, as I was on my way down to the dressing rooms, but it is definitely one of those that could go either way when it comes to discipline. He saw Simmonds coming and braced for the hit. Unfortunately, with his size advantage and the way he moved, his shoulder caught him in the head.
Here is a look at the play...
Any decision on discipline is expected to come down prior to tomorrow's critical Eastern Conference match-up with the Philadelphia Flyers.
