Top NHL Teams can’t stop Devils…Woo Rant: NBC screwed up!

What did this weekend in the beautiful Garden state say about the New Jersey Devils? The Devils beat the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks and are only nine points behind to the top of the Eastern Conference. Confidence is high as Martin Brodeur is practicing and maybe back before the end of the month.

The Devils are a hybrid team that can beat you with their defense or offense, but one thing is certain: they do not give up easily. Adversity has been this season’s theme and nothing seems to stand in the way for the Devils and winning the Stanley Cup. Lou Lamoriello built this team with winners and the well oiled machine has more spare interchangeable parts in the supply house. All around in every position, the Devils have depth as Lamoriello looks to tweak his team’s roster before the March 4th trade deadline. You can never have too many defensemen on your roster (hint hint).

NBC……Great job on picking which game to televise! (sarcasm)

I am wondering what the NBC executives were thinking for trying to televise the Philadelphia Flyers/New York Rangers game yesterday afternoon. Do they not have any flex-scheduling authority like they do with the NFL? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which game to pick and showcase the NHL to the masses.

I know. I understand that New York City is a big market but the Rangers, for the most part, have never lived up the hype of their city like their other sports counterparts. In fact, much has been said about promoting the game and increased scoring will help attract casual fans to the sport. Then why would these executives pick a Rangers team to televise that has an offense ranked near the bottom of the Eastern Conference as opposed to the Devils’ high octane offense which is ranked 3rd? This just baffles me.

Did anybody watch the NBC game? When the Flyers were up in the 3rd period, it looked like a mercy rule was in place. If the NHL had a college football BCS system, the Flyers would have ran up the score to 17-2. Well, one thing is for sure: NBC showcased why the Rangers are really bad struggling team and the whole United States audience got to see it.

Let’s put it this way. Hockey had two great teams from the Eastern and Western Conferences play yesterday afternoon in Newark. It lived up to the hype and the game was exciting in front of a sold out crowd at Prudential Center. But then again, NBC will be in New Jersey for the Stanley Cup finals anyway.
