The Penguins today announced that they have extend the contract of Max Talbot through the 2010-11 season.

"Max has developed into one of the key players in our organization," Ray Shero said. "He has shown his versatility and plays in all situations for our hockey club. He played an integral role in helping our team reach the Finals last season and we look forward to having him for the coming years.”

From the official release:

The 24-year old appeared in 63 games, posting career-highs with 26 points and 14 assists, while adding 12 goals and 53 penalty minutes last season. He tallied nine points (three goals, six assists) along with 36 penalty minutes in 17 playoff contests helping the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Talbot scored a late goal tying the game 3-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Detroit. The Penguins went on to win the game in triple overtime and force Game 6 in Pittsburgh.

More in a bit...there may be some additional news involving a Wilkes Barre-Scranton forward...however, it will have to wait...

Update already...the Penguins have traded forward Jonathan Filewich to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a conditional sixth round draft pick in 2010.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded forward Jonathan Filewich to St. Louis in exchange for a conditional sixth round draft pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Filewich, 24 has registered four points (two goals, two assists) and six penalty minutes in 19 games this season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL).

The 6-2, 205-pound forward appeared in five contests with Pittsburgh last season, including his NHL debut January 21 versus Washington. Filewich has played 243 career games in the AHL with the Penguins, collecting 127 points (64 goals, 63 assists) along with 128 penalty minutes. He has tallied 19 points (11 goals, eight assists) in 35 career playoff games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

The Kelowna, British Columbia native was originally selected by the Penguins in the third round (70th overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft.

Filewich has fallen a long way from two years ago when it was hoped that he could be a future top six winger. The Penguins considered him an option for Sidney Crosby's wing as recently as last season's training camp, but he has seriously regressed over the past two seasons. He still has potential, hopefully the Blues can give him a fresh start.

The Penguins official site is reporting what I have expected for over a week. Ryan Whitney will dress for the parent Penguins this coming Tuesday evening against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Whitney discussed his comeback with the Penguins official site...

“It’s good to get back playing,” Whitney said to Penguins.nhl.com. “You just get sick of watching and just coming in and practicing every day. It’s good to get back into games.”

Whitney also talked about his conditioning assignment...

“I haven’t been down there in a while so it’ll be fun,” Whitney said about playing in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. “I haven’t played in a game in six months. I just have to get in game shape and little things like that.”

“I’m just playing (Saturday) and then coming back,” Whitney said. “I played down there for a year and a half. It was awesome. It should be fun to see some old friends.”

"If Chris Chelios can do it, I have no problem doing it,” he said.

Michel Therrien thinks that it is a good idea for him to play in at least one AHL game before dressing for the Parent Team...

“We believe that to go play at least one game in the American Hockey League will be very good for him,” Therrien told the site. “He didn’t have any training camp. He didn’t have any exhibition games. You could practice and do drills for hours. It’s not the same thing as a game.”
