All the talk about the fighting and angry Senators was just a buzz by local Ottawa media than actual measure of the team. They did not look angry, nor buzzing except for 2 minutes at the end trying to offset a 2 goal gap.
The Isles not only won on the road, not only beat a high powered offense, not only held onto a lead, they added to it and then held on for dear life.
Joey MacDonald came up huge, stopping 29 of 30 shots, letting up only a PP goal.
But that is not to say there wasn't any white knuckles. They gave the Senators every opportunity in the world to get back in it with a myriad of calls that had them of the PK for the end of the game. This included a poor play by Isles dman
Thomas Pock, who launched a flying elbow at
Ryan Shannon's head and will lead to NHL disciplinary action today.
Head games
Pock hasn't quite enamored this blogger in being here on Long Island, and his minutes are close to
Brent Skinner's, who is sans stupid plays. Anyone who watched this game this year and last has noticed a lot of head shots. I am not talking about the faux drama of
Doug Weight's hit which was not only clean, made worse by
Brandon Sutter's ignoring of the position he was in. (Despite the prostrating by large mouthpieces of Hurricances GM,
Jim Rutherford and NJ Coach
Brent Sutter. The latter was understandably skewed since he's Brandon's father, but also who tried to make it sound no large open iced hits ever happened back when he played. Right-o, Brent.
However one point to be made: When the NHL game sped up and became the "new NHL", the split second timing and decision-making has become far more integral. But it leaves some catastrophic results.
"I didn't mean to hit him like that. I'm going to give him a call later. I feel bad about it. It was a bad play, that's all I can say about it."
- Pock, who has known played against Shannon in college.
Quotes like these are now a dime-a-dozen. Pock's elbow was flagrant and should lead to at least a two game suspension.
But the Isles should perhaps consider upgrading the position where Pock hasn't quite shown fans that he belongs, even in this decimated defensive core. Interestingly enough, the Flyers just waived
Lasse Kukkonen which might be the clearing of cap space so they can sign
Brendan Shanahan who will add his vet presence to an already off-kiltered mix of vets and youth that seem diametrically opposed currently in Philly. Kuks is a solid puck mover and good in his own zone, and has far more rounded game than Pock.
Bailey Assists
Isles 1st round pick
Josh Bailey centered a line with
Kyle Okposo and
Andy Hilbert. He received his first point with a nice feed to an Okposo goal. Both had just over 11 minutes of icetime.
The Isles head home to host Ottawa who now might be fighting mad on Saturday.
Stay tuned later for my comedic styling as I wonder what might be next for former Anaheim GM, Brian Burke .
